Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I have chronic anxiety and restlessness, accompanied by a feeling of dread. I am experiencing little to no sleep and eating very little, resulting in a weight loss of 22 lbs in two months. I have been diagnosed with H. pylori (Helicobacter pylori) and have received treatment, but I need confirmation that the treatment is effective. When should I expect to feel relief after starting the treatment? Currently, I am taking Clarithromycin 500 mg, Famotidine 20 mg, Metronidazole 500 mg, Omeprazole 40 mg, and Sucralfate oral suspension 10 ml.

Please help.

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I can understand your concern.

So, two issues may explain your clinical condition. Later, I will answer your specific question regarding the relief of your symptoms after H. pylori (Helicobacter pylori ) treatment. H. pylori is the most common bacteria causing gastritis, which should be treated with antibiotics for 14 days (minimum ten days). The medications you have mentioned are used in H. pylori eradication therapy, but the duration should be appropriate. In your case, chronic anxiety and restlessness are important factors to consider. These symptoms can also cause functional dyspepsia (non-organic symptoms such as lack of appetite, nausea, vomiting, and difficulty eating). This aspect must be addressed alongside H. pylori management.

When you begin your eradication therapy, you should start feeling better even during treatment. As mentioned earlier, antibiotics should be taken for two weeks, while acid suppression medicine like Omeprazole for six weeks. Along with treating H. pylori, it is important to pay proper attention to your anxiety and restlessness. Avoid any undue stressors if possible. Monitor your body weight closely, as weight loss is always considered significant in medical history. If you continue to experience persistent weight loss even after H. pylori treatment and anxiety management, you may need an endoscopic evaluation.

I hope this information is helpful. Please do not hesitate to reach out if you need further assistance.

Thank you.
