Patient's Query
Hi doctor,
My mother is 65 years old. She got tested for hemoglobin and fasting blood sugar. The results are 5.20 mg/dL and 123 mg/dL, respectively. The hemoglobin level is alarming.
Three years ago, she had the same hemoglobin level. She was admitted for a week, and two units of blood were transfused. What to do now?
Please guide.
Hi,
Welcome to icliniq.com.
I have read your query and can understand your concern.
Hemoglobin level is very low for her age, and I think that you should get your mother admitted to the hospital for a blood transfusion. We have to look for the cause of the decrease in hemoglobin.
At this age, bleeding is mostly due to ovarian cysts, fibroids, and uterine cancer. You need to immediately admit your mother, and investigations, such as an ultrasound of the abdomen and pelvis, should be done.
I hope this answers your query.
Please let me know if I can assist you further.
Thank you.
Patient's Query
Hello doctor,
CBC report of my mother is attached. Please suggest the next course of action recommended.
Thank you.
Hi,
Welcome back to icliniq.com.
I have seen the attached report (attachment removed to protect patient identity) of CBC (complete blood count). Hemoglobin is very low, and a blood transfusion should be done. For further physical evaluation, a gynecologist examination has to be carried out to rule out bleeding. Ultrasound of the abdomen is a must.
I hope this answers your query.
Please let me know if I can assist you further.
Thank you.
