Will hemoglobinopathy with the HbE trait cause a problem in an eight-month-old fetus?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I am eight months pregnant. My hemoglobin level has fallen from 11.5 to 9.8 g/dl. After going through an electrophoresis hemoglobin test, my report came HB with E-Trait.

Will this harm my baby?

Please help.

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I have read your query and can understand your concern.

Yes, your report suggests hemoglobinopathy, which is an HbE trait. It is a condition in which the patient can feel tired, and hemoglobin does not usually go above 11 to 12 g/dl.

The patient can live a normal life, and it does not require regular blood transfusions. Your child can acquire the HbE trait, but do not worry about that. For now, continue the prescribed medication as it has good elemental iron. With medication, hemoglobin will improve, so do not worry. Check your serum ferritin level if needed.

In pregnancy, hemodilution can occur, so a mild fall in hemoglobin level can occur.

I hope I have answered your queries.

Revert for any other doubts.

Take care.
