I have a small strand of skin near the anus. What is that?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

There is about a quarter-inch-long strand of skin going away from the anus, and I think it is a hemorrhoid.

Also, it is dark purple in color. I need your help.

Kindly help.

Thank you.

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I want to assure you that do not worry as everything is going to be fine soon. I have thoroughly gone through your case and can well understand your genuine concerns.

I have seen the attached picture and it looks like a hemorrhoid (attachment removed to protect patient identity). I am unsure about the exact position of the lesion, whether it is at the 6, 9, or 11 o'clock position. This condition is usually associated with portal hypertension.

I suggest that you undergo a proctoscopy or colonoscopy by a general surgeon for proper evaluation. The probable diagnosis is hemorrhoids.

For treatment, avoid constipation; if you have constipation, Lactulose syrup may help. Consult your doctor, discuss with him or her, and take the medicine with consent.

Drink plenty of water and maintain a high-fiber diet. Also, ask your primary care physician to refer you to a general surgeon for proper evaluation and treatment plan. Do not leave it untreated, as it may lead to complications and serious consequences.

For further information, consult a medical gastroenterologist online.

I hope this helps you.

Take care.
