Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

My son is nine years old, his triglyceride level is 103 mg/dL high, globulin is 2.0 L, and his weight is about 110 lbs. What should I do?

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I understand your concern.

As per the limited information provided, two things are clear, your son has raised triglycerides level, and his weight is above the 95th centile for his age which comes in the category of obesity. The positive side is his glucose levels are normal, and other numbers are within limits. As far as globulin is concerned, it is borderline low, and the albumin and globulin ratio is normal, so at present, do not worry about it; it just needs a follow-up.

For triglyceride, obesity can be the reason, but jumping to any conclusion needs more information.

  1. Is this routine blood work, or are these tests done due to some problem?
  2. Is he having other problems like skin changes, bumps, striae, etc.?
  3. Have you got his blood pressure checked? What was the reading?
  4. Is he on any medication regularly?
  5. What is his regular diet?

At this point, I will not suggest you go for any medication. Once his weight improves, you can repeat the test. If the reason is only obesity, everything will be normal. Once other information is available, I will suggest to you accordingly and, if needed, some more tests.

I hope you find it helpful.

Kind regards.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

That was just a routine blood test, and he shows a change on his skin, mostly on his arms and back; he is doing great at school. He is homeschooled. He is not on any medication and practices karate and jujitsu four times a week. He does not consume any soda or juice. Eats well, which includes broccoli, spinach, vegetables, and fruit. But loves bread and pasta and cookies, pasta once in a blue moon. He has no cereal, but he does eat oatmeal. Thank you.

Hi,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

I understand your concern.

I saw the details and photographs provided by you (the attachments are removed to protect the patient's identity). It all looks fine; some skin rashes, but as per the pictures does not look of any concern.

As everything else is normal, I suggest you get these tests done also,

  1. TFT (thyroid function test).
  2. Vitamin D levels.
  3. Work on his weight; you may consult a dietician if needed.
  4. Repeat the triglyceride levels after three months.

I hope you find it helpful.

Kind regards.

Same symptoms don't mean you have the same problem. Consult a doctor now!
