I was recently diagnosed with high triglycerides. My triglyceride level is 239 mg/dL. Could you please provide a proper diet plan? I am confused about what I should eat and what I should avoid.

With triglyceride levels of 239 mg/dL, your main goal is to bring them down through the right diet, healthy weight management, and regular physical activity. The good news is that lifestyle changes can make a big difference.

Try to reduce sugar, refined carbohydrates, fried foods, and excess fats, as these directly increase triglyceride levels. At the same time, increase fiber, lean proteins, and healthy fats in your daily meals.

You need to focus more on vegetables and salads, along with whole grains like oats, brown rice, quinoa, and millets. Include plenty of legumes such as beans, lentils, and chickpeas, and choose low glycemic fruits like berries, apples, pears, and guava for better triglyceride control.

Replace red meat with fish (especially salmon, sardines, and mackerel, rich in omega-3), skinless chicken, or plant-based proteins like tofu and pulses.

For fats, choose olive oil, nuts, seeds, and avocado, but keep portions moderate. Avoid sugary drinks, desserts, white bread, white rice, pasta, bakery items, and alcohol, as these can quickly raise triglycerides. Instead, drink plenty of water, green tea, or herbal tea.

Try to eat smaller, balanced meals four to five times a day rather than large portions. Also aim for at least 30 minutes of brisk walking or any exercise on most days of the week.

Lastly, always check your triglycerides in the early morning on an empty stomach (fasting), as levels increase after meals. This gives the true value. Also, get your LDL (low-density lipoprotein) and HDL (high-density lipoprotein) cholesterol tested, as they are equally important. Please share those results with me when available.
