Patient's Query
Hello doctor,
My uncle has HIV and recently got liver problems too. His doctor said it is related. Can you please explain how HIV causes liver issues and if it is treatable? Should he avoid certain foods or medications to prevent further damage?
Kindly suggest.
Hello,
Welcome to icliniq.com.
I read your query and understand your concern.
HIV (human immunodeficiency virus) can lead to liver problems due to chronic inflammation caused by the infection. Coinfections like hepatitis B or C, and the effects of certain antiretroviral medications, can strain the liver. Liver issues can also be due to alcoholism and fatty liver disease, which are more common in people with HIV.
Treatment involves antiviral therapy for hepatitis or adjusting medications if needed. To protect the liver, your uncle should avoid alcohol and reduce fatty foods, and can also take liver-healthy supplements. Plan for LFT (liver function tests) and lipid profile to monitor liver health periodically.
I hope this helps.
Regards.
