Patient's Query
Hello doctor,
I am a 33-year-old male. I have had HIV for two years and I have been under treatment for HIV. I would like to know if there are any side effects of HIV treatment.
Kindly help.
Thank you.
Hello,
Welcome to icliniq.com.
I read your query and understand your concern.
The common side effects can be nausea, diarrhea, fatigue, headache, and insomnia, which may occur when starting treatment but often improve within a few weeks as your body adjusts. Long-term side effects, such as changes in lipid levels, bone density loss, or kidney and liver issues, are rare.
To manage side effects, openly talk with your healthcare provider. Adjusting the timing of doses, changing medications, or taking additional treatments can alleviate side effects. Staying hydrated, eating a balanced diet, and exercising can also help.
ART (antiretroviral therapy) is a lifelong treatment; discontinuing it allows the virus to rebound and can lead to complications. Currently, there is no cure for HIV (human immunodeficiency virus), but research into functional cures and vaccines is ongoing.
To minimize side effects, adhere to your prescribed regimen, and discuss any issues promptly with your doctor. Alternative treatments, such as long-acting injectables, are emerging options, but they complement rather than replace ART. By maintaining treatment, you can achieve an undetectable viral load, which prevents disease progression and transmission.
I hope I have answered your questions.
Let me know if I can assist you further.
Thank you.
