This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

My friend is 28 years old. He is having respiratory problems along with HIV. He is facing shortness of breath, chest pain, and fever sometimes. May I know the medications that can be taken to manage these respiratory problems along with HIV? Can HIV exacerbate respiratory problems? What are the lifestyle changes that can be done to manage these respiratory problems along with HIV? Does he require using inhalers when he faces severe breathing problems? Kindly suggest.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I read your query and understand your concern.

HIV (human immunodeficiency virus) can exacerbate respiratory problems due to weak immunity making individuals more vulnerable to infections like pneumonia or tuberculosis.

To manage the symptoms it is crucial to address both HIV and the underlying cause of breathing problems.

Antiretroviral therapy should be continued to control HIV. Inhalers, such as bronchodilators or corticosteroids, may be prescribed for breathing difficulties, especially if asthma or COPD (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease) is involved.

Lifestyle changes include avoiding smoking, maintaining a healthy weight, staying active with gentle exercise, and managing stress.

Regular check-ups are also important to monitor health including CBC (complete blood count), RBS (random blood sugar), BP (blood pressure), ECG (electrocardiogram), and urine complete

analysis.

I hope this helps.

Take care.
