Patient's Query
Hi doctor,
I am a 59-year-old male and a nonsmoker. Earlier diagnosed with mucus retention cyst of the larynx. Cetrizine and Ambroxol tablets were prescribed. No post-nasal drip was reported, and no evidence of GERD.
Can a recurrent hoarseness of voice (once in four to five months) indicate cancer?
Please help.
Thank you.

Patient's Query
Hi doctor,
No surgical procedure was done for the cyst.
Thank you.
Hi,
Welcome back to icliniq.com.
As I can see, you have been diagnosed with a mucous retention cyst. To confirm the diagnosis, I would recommend you undergo a diagnostic procedure called video laryngostroboscopy. This will exactly tell the nature of the lesion with your vocal cords. Since you are a non-smoker, you need not worry about carcinoma. But since your problem is a long-standing one, please undergo a videostroboscopy. If the diagnosis is a vocal cord mucus retention cyst, you will require a minimally invasive surgical procedure called MLS excision. After that, with good voice rehabilitation, you should be able to get back to your normal voice.
I hope I have answered your queries. If you have more queries, do not hesitate to contact me.
Thank you.
Patient's Query
Hi doctor,
Thank you for your answer.
On videostroboscopy of the larynx, the cyst (Mucus retention) had been confirmed.
Any chances of it becoming a cancer if left unremoved?
Thank you.
Hi,
Welcome back to icliniq.com.
No, the chances are very rare, almost nil, and that too, only mostly in smokers. I would advise you to go for a laser MLS excision of the cyst.
I hope I have answered your queries. If you have more queries, do not hesitate to contact me.
Thank you.
