Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

My daughter is 15 years old and suffers from acne. She is currently taking Minocycline, and it is working, but now she has scars. What do you recommend?

Answered by Dr. Gaurang Gupta

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I read your query and can understand your concern.

It is a quite young age to undergo such treatment as this is the age for the acne to grow as it is due to hormonal imbalance

Post-acne scars are of three types - box scars, icepick (pinpoint scars), and rolling scars. Pinpoint scars are difficult to treat while box scars are easy.

1. No creams or tablets can help you out with scars.

2. Best technique is CO2 Fractional laser subcision. It takes 5 to 6 sittings but results are better than any other procedure.

3. Dermaroller subcision is another method but is less effective than the above.

3. Filler is a hiding effect that fills the pits and gives an impression of fullness, but it is not permanent.

4. Chemical peels can also be effective if scars are not much prominent.

These are techniques you can go through. All procedures take 4 to 6 sittings and 5 to 6 months for better results.

Pimple is somewhat hormonal and due to oily skin.

1. Do not use hair oil and any sticky cream on the face.

2. Avoid oily food, chocolates, and milk products.

3. Avoid dust, and always use sunscreen (above 30 SPF).

4. Do not rub any cream on your face.

5. Do not use any steroid creams.

6. Continue treatment at least for a month.

7. Avoid touching or pressing the acne.

For treatment, I suggest the following.

1. Clindamycin gel. This is more preventive and curative so I tell patients to use it all over the face in the morning.

2. Adapalene gel. I advise using it over acne at night.

3. Tablet Doxycycline 100 mg once a day.

However, please consult a physician, discuss with them, and start taking the medications with their consent.

Hope this helps.

Thanks and take care.
