Is bleeding during my first intercourse normal?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

I am 26 years old. I am going to get married. My query is regarding my virginity. I do like to know whether my hymen is intact.

  1. Will I bleed during my wedding night?
  2. Through the hymen, how can I know my virginity?

Your opinion is of great concern for me.

Thank you.

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I have gone through the photographs (attachment removed to protect patient identity), which show you have an intact hymen. But I need to share a few points regarding this topic. Do not think that all intact hymen bleeds after sex.

Some hymens are too elastic or bloodless so that they do not bleed after a tear. Though this is rare, but could occur. Bleeding often could be so little that it could escape both of your attention. So, keep these factors in your mind despite the fact that you have an intact hymen.

I hope this information helps you.

Feel free to ask further queries.

Thank you.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

Thank you for your reply.

Is it possible to conclude virginity through the hymen?

Please reply conclusively.

Please help.

Thank you.

Hi,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

Yes, you are a virgin, certainly as per the picture. But, do not expect that you will bleed 100 % after first sex. That is I am trying to convince you. When a woman has sex for the first time, she may notice anything from lots of bleeding, only small amounts of bleeding, or no bleeding at all. Whether or not a woman bleeds when she has sex has nothing to do with her virginity. This is due to the different types of hymen.

I hope this information helps you.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

Thank you for your reply.

When I got examined by a gynecologist, she told me that I am not a virgin and was sexually active at some point in time. They described it in technical terms, and I am sending a screenshot of my report. Please do reexamine my pictures and get me out of this dilemma.

Please help.

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

I have gone through the answer (attachment removed to protect patient identity). There is no such thing in the screenshot, which tells that your hymen has been ruptured. But, your questions regarding your virginity, sexually active, etc., has to be answered by you only and definitely an intact hymen does not mean that you are virgin as told by your doctor.

I am sticking to my opinion and it is the same with the others. Your hymen seems to be intact, but this does not provide any guarantee that you will bleed after first intercourse.

I hope it helps.

Thank you.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

Thank you for your reply.

I am sending some more snaps with more clarity of mine. Actually, I had an affair with a guy previously, and now, I am going to get married to another person. This hymen issue should not affect my future life.

Please help.

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

The previous pictures were not bad and I have commented on the basis of those. Now, I have also gone through the recent pictures (attachment removed to protect patient identity), which have a more clarity, I must say. Here, it has been definitely seen the hymen is intact and there is no doubt about it.

There are some white patches as I could visualize. These are normal findings and could be due to yeast infection. Lastly, do not manipulate your genitalia in this manner too frequently. This handling could cause a tear in the hymen, which is intact still now.

I hope it helps.

Thank you.
