How to manage hypertension and anxiety?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I have been a patient with hypertension and anxiety, undergoing treatment for the last two years. Currently, my blood pressure is well under control, averaging 115/70 mmHg, and my pulse varies between 75 and 95 BPM. I am taking a combination of Telmisartan and Chlorthalidone, along with Metoprolol succinate, Escitalopram and Clonazepam. I would like some advice on whether I can reduce or decrease the dosage of my current medication.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I read your query and understood your concern.

If you are taking these medications regularly and the blood pressure and pulse readings are up to date, it would not be advisable to change the medications or their dosages. Your weight (BMI) should also be within healthy limits, with no signs of central obesity. At 202 pounds, I doubt you should stop taking your blood pressure medication or lower the dosage. There are other factors to consider, including cholesterol and lipid levels, kidney function tests, and liver function.

Regarding anxiety medications, you need to consult your psychologist in person for proper evaluations. If deemed appropriate, they may taper off the medication gradually. Do not stop taking it abruptly, as this may lead to serious side effects.

I hope this helps!

Please feel free to ask more questions if you have any; I would be happy to assist.
