What are the main symptoms of hypothyroidism?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I have noticed some unexplained weight gain over the past six months or so, and I am concerned it could be related to a thyroid problem. I have put on around 15 pounds, even though my diet and exercise habits have not changed. I do not have any other obvious symptoms, but I have heard that weight gain can be a sign of hypothyroidism when your thyroid is underactive. At the same time, I know hyperthyroidism with an overactive thyroid can sometimes cause weight loss instead. Could you explain what the main symptoms are for hypothyroidism and hyperthyroidism? How do they typically present with weight changes? Are there other clues I should look for?

Kindly suggest.

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com

I understand your concern.

Unexplained weight gain can be associated with thyroid problems.

Hypothyroidism (a condition in which the thyroid gland does not produce enough thyroid hormones). The symptoms include:

  1. Weight gain.
  2. Fatigue.
  3. Cold intolerance.
  4. Dry skin and hair.
  5. Constipation.
  6. Depression.
  7. Muscle weakness and aches.
  8. Slow heart rate.
  9. Swelling around the face and eyes.
  10. Heavy or irregular menstrual periods.

Hyperthyroidism- Symptoms include:

  1. Weight loss.
  2. Increased appetite.
  3. Heat intolerance.
  4. Nervousness and anxiety.
  5. Tremors.
  6. Rapid heart rate.
  7. Diarrhea.
  8. Sleep disturbances.
  9. Thinning skin and hair.

Other signs:

  1. Neck swelling.
  2. A family history of thyroid problems.
  3. Changes in mood or energy levels.

Must get physically examined by a doctor. Tests include:

  1. Thyroid profile.
  2. Physical examination.
  3. Ultrasound.

I hope this helps.

Kindly follow up if you have more concerns.

Thank you.
