What are the symptoms and management of hypothyroidism?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I got hit with the news that my thyroid has been running low (hypothyroidism). I have gained extra pounds lately, which I guess makes sense now. They have me on those tablets.

  1. Can I do anything with my diet to help out?

  2. Can I munch on certain foods to give my thyroid a boost?

  3. Also, besides the weight gain, what other signs should I watch out for?

  4. I have been feeling sluggish lately; I can barely drag myself out of bed in the mornings. Is that part of it?

I am generally healthy; I have no major issues. But this whole thyroid thing has got me worried. Am I going to have to pop pills forever, or is there a chance it will ease up eventually?

Kindly help.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I read your query and can understand your concern.

Incorporating foods rich in iodine, selenium, and zinc can help promote thyroid health. Examples are iodized salt, seaweed, seafood, Brazil nuts, and lean sources of protein like chicken and turkey.

Consuming foods high in fiber, such as fruits, vegetables, and whole grains, can help regulate digestion, which hypothyroidism may affect.

Symptoms include:

  1. Weight gain.

  2. Fatigue.

  3. Sluggishness.

  4. Dry skin.

  5. Brittle hair.

  6. Constipation.

  7. Sensitivity to cold.

  8. Muscle weakness.

  9. Menstrual irregularities in women.

Medication and lifestyle changes are necessary to manage hypothyroidism.

The duration of treatment is generally long. However, patients must get physically examined by the doctor, and it varies from patient to patient and how well diet and lifestyle are managed.

I hope I have answered your question.

Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards.
