Can I workout with a 5 mm inguinal hernia?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I need some advice if it is possible. I am a 26-years-old man. My weight is 165.34 pounds with no medical or chirurgical history. I do not take any medications. However, I have been diagnosed with an inguinal hernia of 0.19 inches, which is discoverable in scan and visible only under valsalva maneuver. Is it possible for me to do sports (workout), especially planks or sit-ups? Thank you for your time.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

The smaller the hernia, the riskier it is. I suggest you to , get operated on as soon as possible, quit smoking, take vitamin C (citrus fruits), wear a hernia supporter, avoid heavy exercise, and I will suggest running rather than plank and abs exercise as it will aggravate hernial problem.
