Why do I still have IUD-related effects after removal at 65?
Patient's Query
Hello doctor,
I had an IUD removed years ago, but my body never felt the same afterward. My periods stayed irregular, my moods felt off, and bloating and breast tenderness still come and go, even now at 65.
Can someone at 65 still experience IUD-related hormonal effects years after removal, or is this just menopause overlapping and making everything confusing? Doctors tend to brush it off, but I feel like something shifted and never reset.
It is frustrating living with symptoms that no one can clearly explain. I just want to know whether this is normal aging or something that deserves proper evaluation.
Please advise.
Thank you.
Hello,
Welcome to icliniq.com.
I have read your query and understand your concern.
I have read your query and am sorry to hear about the discomfort and frustration you have been experiencing. At age 65, it is unlikely that an IUD (intrauterine device) removed many years ago is still directly causing hormonal effects.
In most cases, the hormonal influence of an IUD fades within weeks to months after removal. Your symptoms are more likely related to menopause, age-related hormonal changes, or another underlying medical condition rather than lingering effects from the IUD itself.
However, symptoms such as irregular bleeding, bloating, breast tenderness, and mood changes should still be properly evaluated, especially at this stage of life. True menstrual or postmenopausal bleeding is not generally considered normal and should not be ignored.
Conditions such as uterine polyps, fibroids, thyroid disorders, medication side effects, or other hormonal or gynecological issues may need to be ruled out.
A thorough evaluation may include a pelvic examination, pelvic ultrasound, thyroid function tests, and assessment of any postmenopausal bleeding or persistent symptoms. Even if the IUD is not the direct cause, your concerns are valid and deserve careful medical attention rather than being dismissed.
I hope you find my reply helpful, and I encourage you to seek a detailed evaluation for reassurance and appropriate care.
Thank you.
