Patient's Query
Hello doctor,
I have had Invisalign for about a year and a bit. I was very good about wearing my trays for the first six months, but I have slowly become extremely noncompliant. At this point, I went almost a month without wearing my trays and then tried putting in an old one again, which caused immense pain.
I want to do better and have recommitted. I have already put in my first new tray in a while. What should I do besides continuing with the treatment? What harm have I done by being inconsistent, other than possibly extending my treatment time?
Also, I am not great about brushing my teeth after eating. I often have plaque and tartar buildup, though I have not had any cavities. How does this affect my treatment? Is there anything else I should know?
Please help.
Thank you.
Hello,
Welcome to icliniq.com.
I understand your concern.
The main risk of taking long breaks with Invisalign is that your teeth can shift back, making each new tray feel like starting over. While this usually does not ruin your treatment, it can cause more discomfort, slow your progress, and may require extra trays to get back on track. The good news is that you have already recommitted, and maintaining consistency from now on will make a significant difference.
Plaque and tartar will not stop the trays from moving your teeth, but they do create an unhealthy environment, leading to swollen gums, bad breath, and a higher risk of gum disease. Since aligners sit snugly over your teeth, they can trap bacteria against the enamel if you are not brushing well, which worsens these risks. Brushing after meals and keeping your trays clean will protect your gums and help ensure your aligners fit properly.
Think of it this way: the trays are doing the heavy lifting, but your daily hygiene keeps the foundation strong. If you stay consistent now, both in wearing and cleaning. You will still reach the finish line with a healthy smile.
I hope this helps.
Kindly follow up if you have more concerns.
Thank you.
