How can ischemic heart disease be effectively managed?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

My mother experienced sudden heart pain, so I took her to the hospital. After an ECG and further testing, we learned that she has ischemic heart disease and that two of her heart valves are blocked. She has diabetes and high blood pressure, which led to atherosclerosis three days ago. The doctor recommended angiography. Is angiography and stenting a good option for her? Please also provide information about treating heart problems and dietary recommendations for heart health.

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

An angiogram needs to be performed on your mother to determine the extent of the blockages. Additionally, since she has blocked valves, as you mentioned, open-heart surgery and valve replacement would be more suitable for her than stenting. For a heart-healthy diet, it is beneficial to avoid excessive consumption of fried foods and red meat. Lean meats such as chicken and fish are recommended. It is better to cook with oils like sunflower oil or groundnut oil instead of coconut oil. If she is diabetic, ensure her blood sugar levels are strictly controlled.

Thanks and regards.
