How can I treat redness and itching in my genital area?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I have redness and itching on my genitals. It started three days ago. What should I do to treat it?

Please advise.

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I understand that redness and itching in the genital area can be uncomfortable and worrying, especially when it starts suddenly. I am glad you sought early advice.

Based on your symptoms, there are a few possible reasons for the redness and itching. One common cause is a fungal infection, such as candidal balanitis or tinea. These infections are very common in the genital area and usually cause itching, redness, and discomfort, especially in warm or moist conditions. Another possibility is irritant or allergic contact dermatitis, which can happen if the skin reacts to soaps, body washes, condoms, lubricants, detergents, or even friction from tight clothing.

Less commonly, the symptoms may be due to a bacterial infection, particularly if there is pain, swelling, or discharge. Sexually transmitted infections (STIs) can also cause redness and irritation, especially if there is associated discharge, pain during urination, sores, or ulcers. Lastly, the rash may be due to intertrigo or friction-related irritation, which occurs when moisture, sweating, and skin-to-skin rubbing irritate the area.

Since this started about three days ago, it could be due to several possible causes, and seeing the area will help a lot. If you are comfortable, please share clear photos of the affected area (in good lighting and from a couple of angles). This will help narrow down the diagnosis and guide proper treatment.

To better understand your condition, please also answer a few questions:

  • Is the redness limited to the skin folds, glans, or shaft, or does it involve the scrotum as well?
  • Is there any white discharge, scaling, cracks, or foul smell?
  • Do you notice burning while urinating or any discharge from the penis?
  • Have you had recent sexual activity, especially unprotected?
  • Any new soaps, body washes, condoms, lubricants, or detergents used recently?
  • Do you sweat a lot in the area, or keep it moist for long periods?
  • Is there a history of diabetes, recent illness, or antibiotic use?
  • Is the itching worse at night or constant throughout the day?

In the meantime, it is important to take good care of the affected area.

  • Keep the genital skin clean and dry by gently washing once a day with plain water or a mild, fragrance-free cleanser.
  • Avoid using soaps, antiseptics, powders, or any home remedies, as these can further irritate the skin.
  • Wear loose-fitting cotton underwear and avoid tight clothes to reduce sweating and friction.
  • Try not to scratch the area, because scratching can worsen the irritation and may lead to a secondary infection.
  • It is best to avoid sexual activity until the cause of the symptoms is identified and the redness and itching have improved.
  • Also, do not apply steroid creams or mixed combination creams.
  • For itching, take the tablet Cetirizine 10 mg at bedtime. Consult your specialist doctor, discuss with them, and take the medicines with their consent.

Once you share the photos and answers to the questions above, I can guide you more accurately regarding the diagnosis and appropriate treatment.

I hope it helped with your query.

Thank you.
