What is the treatment for itching during winter?
Patient's Query
Hi doctor,
I feel itching all over my body, especially during sunrise, and all this happens during the cold season. After winter, my body returns to normal condition. What should I do?
Kindly guide.
Hi,
Welcome to icliniq.com.
I can understand your concern.
What you describe is most consistent with winter itch due to dry skin xerosis, sometimes combined with temperature change-related itching. During cold seasons, the air is dry, and humidity is low, which damages the skin barrier and leads to generalized itching even without a visible rash. When sunlight or warmth hits your body, blood flow to the skin increases and nerve endings become more sensitive, which can trigger itching. The fact that it completely improves when the cold season ends strongly supports a seasonal dryness cause rather than a serious internal disease.
What you should do is focus on skin barrier protection.
- Use a thick moisturizer twice daily, and especially after bathing.
- Choose creams or ointments containing petroleum jelly, glycerin, ceramides, or urea.
- Avoid hot showers and use lukewarm water instead.
- Use a mild soap only on necessary areas like armpits and groin, not the whole body.
- Wear soft cotton clothing and avoid wool directly on the skin.
- Using a room humidifier during winter can help a lot.
- If itching is bothersome, a non-drowsy antihistamine like Cetirizine at night can reduce symptoms.
If you ever develop hives, redness, swelling, severe itching after cold exposure, weight loss, night sweats, jaundice, or itching that continues even in warm seasons, then further evaluation with blood tests such as CBC (complete blood count), liver function, thyroid tests, and iron studies would be needed. I have one important question to ask. When you itch, do you see red raised wheals or hives, or is the skin normal but just itchy?
I hope this information will help you.
Thank you.
