What causes burning sensation and itchy scalp during winter?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I am feeling a pin prick feeling and burning sensation in my skin when getting warm or the temperature rises during winter. I also have an itchy scalp and dandruff appears just after shampooing. Is this due to any skin problem? Currently, I am taking Levocetirizine Dihydrochloride and Trigaine AD shampoo.

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com and thank you for choosing us as your provider for medical care.

Please send some high-resolution photos to differentiate the fungal infection in your hair. It can be either a fungal infection with folliculitis or seborrhea capitis. I would suggest you use Salisia KT Shampoo (Salicylic Acid and Ketoconazole), twice weekly and keep it applied for 15 minutes for itchy scalp and dandruff before washing it off. Take tablet Nizral (Ketoconazole) 200 mg once daily for 28 days. Apply Kz (Ketoconazole) cream once in the morning over the affected part of the face and body for itch and dryness. Consult your specialist doctor, discuss with him or her, and then take the medications.

Recommended investigations are liver function tests and renal function tests.

I would suggest the following preventive measures.

  1. Avoid scratching with nails.
  2. Avoid oiling the scalp. If needed, then only for an hour and then wash it off.
  3. You can use other shampoo if needed on other days.
  4. You should increase your fruit, protein, and vegetable intake.

Thank you.
