Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I have a newborn baby boy, born a few days ago, weighing 8.81848 pounds. after a 40-week normal pregnancy. Following a regular delivery where the baby cried normally, the pediatrician prescribed phenobarbitone syrup after vaccination. Despite asking about potential seizure issues, I was informed it aids in the baby's sleep and prevents jaundice. Seeking guidance on whether it is advisable to administer the phenobarbitone syrup to my newborn, considering my concerns. Kindly help.

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I can understand your concern.

Considering your baby's normal delivery, immediate crying after birth, and an absence of seizure history, there appears to be no necessity for Phenobarbitone (Phenobarbital). Let the baby determine their sleep pattern naturally through regular activity and proper feeding is advisable.

Phenobarbitone is typically indicated for specific types of jaundice, but for the common jaundice observed in newborns, no medication is usually required. The only recommended medicine at this stage is Vitamin D 400 IU once daily. It is advisable to minimize unnecessary medications.

Ensure the baby is breastfed adequately, and embrace the joys of motherhood.

I hope this information will help you.

Thank you.
