Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I am 18 years old, and I have keratosis pilaris. What skincare routine should I follow? How can I get treated for keratosis pilaris? What medicine should I take?

Hello.

Welcome to icliniq.com.

Keratosis pilaris is the formation of thick dead cells on the skin. They require softening of the area and consistent treatment to reduce their appearance. They appear due to multiple factors, including genetic susceptibility, climate changes, dietary factors, hormonal factors, repeated shaving or trauma, and recurrent folliculitis after inflammation has subsided. I suggest you do the following:

  1. Salicylic acid 2 % and Glycolic acid face wash may be used twice daily. Massage in gentle circular motions and wash off within one minute.
  2. Peroclin (Clindamycin and Benzoyl peroxide) may be applied to the affected area in the morning for three weeks.
  3. Hydrocortisone cream 1 % may be applied on the affected areas in a very thin layer using the smallest quantity possible at night for two weeks. They help reduce the thickness and textural repair on the affected area.
  4. Tablet Ascorbic acid 500 mg is to be taken once daily after food for one month. They help in faster healing of the lesions.
  5. Kindly avoid oily and fried food, red meat, milk, dairy products, and sweets. Instead, consume more fruits, vegetables, fiber-containing food, and at least 12 glasses of water daily. These dietary changes would help with preventing the recurrence of the lesions.
  6. Glycolic acid chemical peels are done in six sessions every two weeks to one month and may also be helpful for skin rejuvenation. These are procedures that may be done following direct consultation with a Dermatologist. They may be beneficial to prevent recurrence as well.

I suggest you do the following:

  1. Logifeel-IMF (Glycolic acid, Lactic acid, and Urea) cream can be applied on the affected areas in a thin layer in the morning. In addition, hydrocortisone cream 1 % may also be used once daily at night in a thin layer on the affected area, as mentioned above.
  2. Novasoft cream (Liquid paraffin and soft white paraffin) is used three to four times a day after bathing and cleaning the area.
  3. Dermatologists can do chemical peeling to reduce the appearance of keratosis pilaris. However, it may need direct consultation to undergo the procedures, which are done in sessions once a month.
  4. Take the Omega-3 capsules once daily after food at night for one month.
  5. Take the capsule Evion (vitamin E) 400 mg once daily after food at night for one month. The capsules help moisturize and soften the skin to help reduce its appearance.

Keratosis pilaris is a time-consuming condition to treat. I would also request you provide an image of the affected area on the image option in the query section for further assessment of severity and management.

Hope the above details were informative. Kindly follow up in case of further queries. I would be glad to help. Do not worry.

Hope I could be of help.

Stay happy, healthy, and safe.
