I have severe knee pain. Could uric acid be the cause?
Patient's Query
Hello doctor,
I am a 29-year-old male with a history of sudden knee pain. About two years ago, I had a similar issue, though not in this knee.
I am currently taking painkillers and uric acid control medication, but for the past five days, my knee pain has been severe, making it difficult to bend.
Could this be related to my uric acid levels or something else?
Kindly help.
Hello,
Welcome to icliniq.com.
I understand that this must be very painful for you, as not being able to bend your knee for five days is a serious problem and should not be ignored.
Since no medical tests have been performed yet, we cannot be certain that this problem is due to elevated uric acid alone, because other conditions, such as infection, injury, or arthritis, can produce similar symptoms.
It is very important that you seek medical evaluation as soon as possible, including blood tests such as uric acid levels, complete blood count, and markers of inflammation, and possibly imaging of the knee or analysis of the joint fluid.
If you also experience fever, severe swelling, or redness around the knee, you should seek immediate medical attention, because these could be signs of a joint infection, which is a medical emergency.
Home care, in the meantime, you can follow:
-
Rest the knee and avoid weight-bearing.
-
Apply cold packs (not heat) to reduce pain and swelling.
-
Stay well-hydrated.
-
Avoid alcohol, red meat, organ meats, and very high–purine foods.
For pain relief, doctors often prescribe medications such as nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, including Naproxen or Indomethacin, or medications such as Colchicine in cases of gout.
You should not start any strong medications on your own without consulting a doctor, because the diagnosis has not yet been confirmed, and the treatment needs to be tailored to the cause.
I hope this information helps you.
Thank you.
