Is knee pain with swelling a sign of an injury?
Patient's Query
Hello doctor,
My knee has been hurting and is swollen.
What could be wrong with it?
Please help.
Thank you.
Hi,
Welcome to icliniq.com.
I have gone through your query and understand your concern.
Knee pain and swelling:
Knee pain is a common complaint that affects people of all ages. It may be caused by an injury or other medical conditions, including arthritis, patellar tendinitis, ACL (anterior cruciate ligament) injury, knee bursitis, torn meniscus, gout, and infections.
Try some home remedies for your pain.
1. Ice helps control pain and swelling. It can be applied to the knee for 15 to 20 minutes every two to four hours. While icing, the swollen knee should be elevated above the level of the heart.
2. Temporarily avoid activities that provoke pain.
3. If the knee is swollen or sore, the following positions and activities should be avoided until knee pain and swelling resolve:
- Squatting.
- Kneeling.
- Twisting and pivoting.
- Jogging, aerobics, dancing, and sports.
4. Specific exercises will help you improve range of motion, strength, and endurance. Focus on strengthening and stretching your quadriceps since these muscles are the primary stabilizers of your kneecap. Core exercises may also be recommended to maintain your abdominal and lower back muscles. Do exercises only once the pain reduces.
5. Also, maintaining a healthy body weight to avoid overstressing your knees is very important.
6. You can take some tablets:
- Tablet Ibuprofen 200 mg: One tablet is taken twice daily after eating food for 10 days.
- Tablet Pantoprazole 40 mg: One tablet once daily before food for 10 days.
- Tablet Shelcal 500 mg: One tablet once daily before food for 30 days.
- Capsule D-Shine 60k: One capsule once daily for 10 days, then once a month for 11 months.
Take these only if you are not allergic to them and have no known case of bronchial asthma. Have a follow-up a few days after starting these remedies.
Preventive measures include the use of a hinged knee brace for support.
