Can a patient with retinal diseases undergo LASIK surgery?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I want to undergo LASIK surgery for myopia in my eyes. I went to the first hospital to do a pre-examination for LASIK surgery, but I failed the exam because they found that I have a retinal disease called lamellar macular hole and epimacular membrane. So the doctor did not recommend the LASIK surgery because of that disease. So I went to the second hospital, and they also found the same disease, but they recommended underging the LASIK surgery because it will not affect the retinal disease. So there are two different opinions. Now I want another opinion on this. I want to undergo the LASIK surgery because I do not want to wear glasses anymore.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I have read your query and seen the reports (attachment removed to protect the patient's identity). Your right eye has a lamellar macular hole which can progress to a full-thickness macular hole in some years, so you must undergo retinal surgery. You can undergo LASIK (laser-assisted in situ keratomileusis) surgery, but your glasses will be taken off for 10 to 15 years, and you will have to wear presbyopia glasses. So you can undergo LASIK surgery, but the retinal vision will not get affected, and presbyopia will start after age 40.
