Can Levothyroxine cause heavy and painful bleeding?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

I am a 19 years old female who is taking tablet Levothyroxine for hypothyroidism. But, I suddenly stopped taking it and had amenorrhea, which made me have no bleeding for weeks. Then I started taking tablet Levothyroxine again but now I have been bleeding for three weeks with a gap of three days when I stopped in between. My bleeding is extremely heavy and painful with cramps that hurt badly. I have even gained weight and dealing with vomiting. I am actually tired and depressed about all of this. What to do? Please help me.

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

First of all, I would like to advise you to never stop any medicine on your own because these medications can have sudden withdrawal symptoms, which can be harmful. Always consult your treating doctor before starting or stopping any medicines, because these medicines have side effects on use.

I understand your concern. As you have stopped taking the tablet Levothyroxine 75 mg, and again started taking it after a period of amenorrhea, the bleeding started after restarting the tablet Levothyroxine 75 mg, is because of hormonal imbalance and changes in the thyroid levels T3 (triiodothyronine) and T4 (thyroxine). I would advise you to consult your doctor and get your thyroid levels checked again. As the medicine is stopped, it can cause thyroid dysfunction.
