What are some ways to deal with loneliness?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I recently moved away from home to attend college, and it is beginning to affect me emotionally. I feel lonely, and I would like to register my dog from back home as an emotional support animal because he has been a tremendous help with my emotional and mental well-being. He provides me with love and companionship and follows me everywhere. However, I need a doctor's note to bring him with me. What do you recommend I do? Can you provide assistance with obtaining a note?

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I understand your concern.

Since when have you been feeling lonely? I want you to consider not only your own well-being but also your dog's. What will you do with your dog when you go out? Is there anyone who could look after your pet where you live? Are pets allowed there? I promise you it will only be for a few months, after which things will get better. I know you are a courageous young man. I suggest you try a few strategies and follow up afterward.

  1. Engage in enjoyable activities to distract yourself from homesickness.
  2. Focus on positive thoughts and practice gratitude to improve your mood.
  3. Reframe your perception of time to see your time away as shorter.
  4. Renew your connection with home through letter writing to feel closer.
  5. Seek support from someone and make new friends to build a support network

I hope this helps you.

Thank you.
