What do low ferritin and high hemoglobin levels indicate?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello,

I am a 27-year-old male. My recent blood test revealed a ferritin level of 25 and a hemoglobin level of 151. While my personal nurse has suggested iron supplements due to occasional fatigue, I am hesitant to start them without a doctor's input. I have noticed fluctuations in my energy levels but have also experienced periods of vitality. I have begun adjusting my diet to include more iron-rich foods and do not take any medications that could contribute to this issue. Besides fatigue, I do not exhibit any other concerning symptoms, though I do have a history of depression, which is currently managed.

My main concern is whether I should be worried about these blood test results and if taking iron supplements is necessary. I have noticed tiredness intermittently, with today being a particularly fatigued day. Kindly help.

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I can understand your concern.

I am deeply sorry to hear about your medical condition. Based on your symptoms and laboratory results, it appears that your ferritin level is slightly low, but your hemoglobin level is significantly low, suggesting you may have iron deficiency anemia, which could be causing your fatigue.

To address this, I recommend taking an iron supplement to boost your hemoglobin levels. Please take two tablets of Ferrous sulfate 220 mg orally three times a day for once a month. Additionally, incorporate plenty of fruits, vegetables, and unripe plantains into your diet, as they contain natural sources of iron.

For your depression, I suggest taking one tablet of Sertraline 10 mg, orally once daily for one month. I hope these recommendations provide some relief and improvement in your condition. Let us schedule another appointment for follow-up, which can be conducted via chat, phone, or video consultation.

I hope this information will help you.

Thank you.
