Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

My son is 8 years old and has been having abnormal blood work for two years now and I am not sure what to ask the doctors to look into. We did not even get a call back about his blood work.

1. Vitamin D 24 ng/mL.

2. MCHC 33.3 g/dL , 34.2 g/dL, 33.2 g/dL.

3. Hgb 13.0 g/dL , 17.1 g/dL, 13.5 g/dL.

4. RBC 4.43 /L , 4.44 /L, 4.73 /L

He has frequent headaches, fatigue and is not very active. I brought him to a pediatric neurologist with our native clinic who only asked questions and did no tests. I am not specific on what tests to run and I really got nothing. I have asked for vitamin D levels to be checked. I am concerned about the hemoglobin levels and cannot think of any reason for them to be up to speak with a doctor about it.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

1. Kindly tell me what abnormality you have found in the blood report. The readings of vitamin D, Mchc (Mean corpuscular hemoglobin concentration), Hgb (hemoglobin), and RBC (red blood cell) that you have provided all seem normal for his age. It would be better if you could send a scan or take a photograph of the investigations and send it.

2. Kindly get a complete blood count, serum glutamic-pyruvic transaminase, creatinine, vitamin D levels, iron studies, stool routine, urine routine, and x-ray chest to see for any anomaly. These are very basic tests.

3. Most of the children in this age group mostly eat outside food and eat less homemade food leading to such problems. So this habit will also have to be checked.

4. Sometimes there may be worm infestation in the child leading to these issues. This can be solved by giving only one dose of Albendazole (Methyl 5-(propylthio)-2-Benzimidazole Carbamate) 400 mg at night.

5. You can continue the medicines or supplements that you are giving currently. I would like to add calcium and cut down water, and kefir (fermented milk). I hope I have cleared your doubts.

Thank you.
