My right knee is showing symptoms post-reconstruction for a fall. What could be the cause?

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I fell from a 20 feet high area while skiing and broke my left hip (which is now reconstructed) and my right femur (fixed with a rod or nail inserted through the knee). After almost two months since the reconstruction, my right knee has started being problematic, and I suspect soft tissue damage. I took a magnetic resonance imaging of my knee and have attached it. Please take a look and guide me with what might be the reason?

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I have read your query and gone through the MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) image you have attached (attachment removed to protect the patient's privacy).

I can see from your MRI that there is some degree of marrow edema (fluid build-up in the bone marrow) and bone bruises (a type of traumatic injury to the bone which is not severe as a fracture) involving the surface of the bones forming the knee joint. Also, there is a small amount of fluid collection in the bursal space (a sac present between the bone and tendons or muscles around the joint), which might be due to the bone bruise. However, there is no soft tissue injury as you perceived. Concerning the bone bruise and edema, these will gradually resolve and can be managed conservatively in most cases (without any intervention or surgery).

I suggest you rest, limit movement, and exercise as recommended by your doctor and stay assured as this is not a serious issue.

I hope this helps.
