Patient's Query
Hello doctor,
I have developed a habit of masturbating and feel a strong urge every night. I try hard to resist, but I am unable to fall asleep unless I do it. However, afterward, I feel very depressed and bad about myself, and I find it difficult to concentrate on my studies. I feel that this has become a serious problem for me.
Kindly help.
Thank you.
Hello,
Welcome to icliniq.com.
I read your query and understood your concern.
Masturbation is generally not harmful and does not cause permanent physical weakness. However, in your case, the bigger issue is that it has become closely linked to your sleep routine and is causing distress, guilt, low mood, and difficulty concentrating on your studies.
When a behavior starts feeling compulsory rather than voluntary, it is worth addressing the habit rather than simply fighting the urge every night. I would suggest the following:
Engage in regular evening exercise, jogging, gym workouts, outdoor sports, or physical games.
Meet new people and participate in social activities.
Spend time on hobbies and productive activities that keep your mind occupied.
Try to make yourself physically tired through healthy exercise, as this may improve sleep and reduce nighttime urges.
Avoid pornography.
Avoid excessive social media scrolling before bedtime.
Avoid sexual content before going to sleep.
Paroxetine (a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor) can help with temporary relief. I suggest you consult a specialist, take the medication with their consent.
I hope you are satisfied with my answer.
Thank you.
