Patient's Query
Hello doctor,
Kindly tell me:
Can I give MCT oil to my one-and-a-half-year-old baby?
He was recently diagnosed with asthma, but he is currently not taking any medications. Is it safe to give him MCT oil?
Please help.
Thank you.
Hello,
Welcome to icliniq.com.
I have gone through your query and understand your concern.
Yes, MCT (Medium Chain Triglyceride) oil can be given to some children, but it is usually recommended for specific medical or nutritional reasons, such as poor weight gain, fat malabsorption, or certain metabolic conditions. It is not routinely needed for every child.
For your one-and-a-half-year-old, I would first like to know why you are considering MCT oil.
Is your child underweight, a picky eater, or experiencing poor weight gain?
If so, please tell me his current weight and height.
Regarding asthma, MCT oil does not treat asthma. If your child has recently been diagnosed with asthma but is currently symptom-free, continue to avoid triggers such as
Cigarette smoke.
Dust.
Strong perfumes.
Respiratory infections.
If he develops wheezing, a persistent cough, fast breathing, or difficulty breathing, he should be reviewed by his doctor, as some children require reliever or controller medications even when symptoms are intermittent.
I hope I have answered your question.
Let me know if I can assist you further.
Thank you.
