Patient's Query
Hello doctor,
Is it possible for a heavy drinker who is taking Adderall and Wellbutrin to drink alcohol along with the medications, then be involved in an incident shortly after, and later claim memory loss or false memories of what happened, even though they appeared sober at the time?
Please help.
Thank you.
Hello,
Welcome to icliniq.com.
I have read your query and can understand your concern.
Yes, it is possible. When someone drinks heavily while also taking medications like Adderall (Amphetamine salts) and Wellbutrin (Bupropion), the effects on the brain can be unpredictable.
Alcohol alone can cause blackouts, where a person may look functional or even appear sober but later has little or no memory of what actually happened. Adderall, being a stimulant, can mask some of the outward signs of alcohol intoxication, so the person may not look drunk even though they are still impaired. Wellbutrin adds another risk, since it can lower the seizure threshold and, when combined with alcohol, may worsen confusion, unusual behaviors, or memory problems.
Because of these overlapping effects, it is medically possible for someone to seem composed at the time of an incident but later report memory gaps, altered recall, or even false memories. This is not always intentional; it can be a real neurologic effect from the interaction of alcohol with these drugs.
From a safety standpoint, mixing alcohol with Adderall and Wellbutrin is strongly discouraged. It increases the risk of accidents, impaired judgment, and long-term harm to brain health.
I hope this answers your query.
Please let me know if I can assist you further.
Thank you.
