How to manage irregular periods and lower abdominal pain?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

I am 18 and I have not had my period for the past two months. I sometimes feel pain in my lower abdomen, and I have been noticing daily white discharge. I also feel like I have gained some weight recently. I eat a lot of junk food daily, like chips. I am a bit worried and would appreciate some advice.

Thank you.

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

Thanks for choosing this platform.

I read your query and can understand your concern.

It is really good that you are paying attention to the changes happening in your body. We will take a look at your symptoms together and try to understand what could be affecting your cycle.

Here are the main symptoms and changes you have described.

  1. No periods for the last 2 months.

  2. White discharge every day.

  3. Occasional pain in your lower belly.

  4. Some weight gain.

  5. Eating junk food often.

Possible reasons behind these changes could be the following:

1. Irregular periods are normal at this age. At this age, it is very common for periods to be irregular, especially in the first few years after they start. It is not unusual to skip a month or even two without it, meaning something serious.

2. Food and routine can affect the cycle. Eating too much junk food and not getting enough nutrients can affect how your body works, including your period. Gaining weight and not being very active can also be part of the reason.

3. White discharge is often normal. If the discharge is white and does not smell bad or cause itching, it is usually nothing to worry about. It is something many girls experience regularly.

4. The body might be a bit out of balance. If your period stays away for longer, or you keep gaining weight and having pain, it might be a sign your body needs a little help getting back into balance. Sometimes, this can happen during the teen years and is fixable with some support.

In the meantime, please follow these steps:

  1. Cut back on chips and snacks - Try to eat more fruits, vegetables, and home-cooked meals.

  2. Drink more water every day.

  3. Try simple movements like walking or light stretching for 15 to 20 minutes.

  4. Get enough sleep and try to reduce phone or screen time at night.

It is a good idea to check in with a doctor if the following happens:

  1. If your period does not return after another month.

  2. If you feel a lot of pain or bloating.

  3. The discharge changes (becomes yellow or green, smells bad, or causes itching).

A doctor might test for hormonal changes or suggest a scan to better understand what is going on.

Many girls your age go through this, and it is very common. With a few small changes and a bit of help, things usually start to improve.

If you would like, I can help you create a simple one-week food and daily routine plan to support your body and help your cycle come back naturally.

I hope this helps.

Please revert in case of further queries.

Thank you.
