Does metabolic surgery influence heart function?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I am 48 years old, overweight, and have a family history of heart disease. My doctor has suggested metabolic surgery since my body mass index (BMI) is 41, and I am currently struggling with high cholesterol and prediabetes. However, I am concerned about how the surgery might affect my heart health. Could this procedure increase my risk of complications such as blood clots or arrhythmias? Would the weight loss resulting from the surgery improve my cardiovascular health in the long term?

Please help me.

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I read your query and understood it.

Gastric bypass and other types of weight-loss surgery, also known as bariatric or metabolic surgery. It involves making changes to your digestive system to help you lose weight. Bariatric surgery is typically recommended when diet and exercise have not been effective or when you have serious health issues related to your weight.

When combined with a healthy diet and regular exercise, bariatric surgery can lead to significant weight loss and a reduced risk of various health problems, including heart disease, stroke, type 2 diabetes, and high blood pressure. Metabolic and bariatric procedures have been shown to significantly improve quality of life and overall survival, especially by reducing the risk of death from cardiovascular disease.

I hope this has helped you.

Kindly follow up if you have more doubts.

Thank you.
