Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

My girlfriend had four Misoprostol tablets yesterday. She had cramps and many other symptoms for two hours. But she did not have periods yet. What to do next?

Thank you.

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

If you have taken the pills for getting periods or for an abortion, this is not the best way to have it. This tablet will make the cervical canal softer and make the uterus contract so that if there is blood or a product of pregnancy in the uterine cavity, it will come out. But how can you get bleeding if it is not freely lying there?

A few more pieces of information about periods or pregnancy would have been helpful.

If you take it for getting periods, take oral birth control or contraceptive pills (not for contraception) such as tablets Novelon or Ovral-G or Duoluton-L or Dear 21 or Intimacy plus 3. Take one tablet twice daily for 10 days (throw away the 21s pill). No matter the cause (except pregnancy), you will get periods within 7 to 10 days.

If you are having this for an abortion, you must meet a doctor and have an initial dose of Mifepristone and then Misoprostol. Only then will you have complete and proper bleeding. If only tried with Misoprostol- many may need dilation and curettage (D and C). As I mentioned, you will not need surgical intervention if you are properly treated.

I hope I have clarified your query, do write back if any more queries.

All the best
