Is MMR vaccine safe to be taken during pregnancy?
Patient's Query
Hello doctor,
My wife is one month pregnant, and unknowingly she got the first dose of MMR vaccine. What should she do now because later on, she learned that while being a month pregnant, she could not take the MMR vaccine? Please kindly advise me.
Thank you.
Hello,
Welcome to icliniq.com.
I fully understand your concern and will surely help you.
The MMR vaccine is a live vaccine and is not suitable for use during pregnancy. Further, you must be already aware that a month gap is recommended post-taking the MMR vaccine and planning conception. A few years back, it was a three-month gap recommendation. Being a live vaccine, there is a chance of rubella syndrome and heart defects post-MMR vaccine dose. Please visit your gynecologist as the case would require handling as per the national policy or laws regarding whether to abort or not. Feel free to ask any questions or to share any additional information.
Thank you.
