Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I have been diagnosed with the monkeypox virus and have developed rashes on my face and body. I could have contacted the infection from my office. Presently, I am staying indoors and taking rest. Can you give me some tips to help manage the infection?

Kindly advise.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

Monkeypox is a mild disease with smallpox-like symptoms. Therefore, it needs symptomatic and supportive care. The acute phase of the illness lasts for about two to three weeks. Currently, there is only one licensed treatment for monkeypox (capsule Tecovirimat 200 mg, approved for use in the Europe). However, there are antivirals like tablet Brincidofovir 100 mg that work to reduce the disease load but have no known effect on overall prognosis except reducing the contagiousness of the disease.

The best way to manage milder infections includes the following treatment:

  1. Tablet Acetaminophen (Paracetamol) for fever greater than 99.5 degrees Fahrenheit.
  2. Antibiotics for secondary bacterial infection (that are to be used only on a local doctor's prescription).
  3. Taking adequate fluids (about 12 to 16 cups per day).

I suggest you consult a local doctor in case of fever that is not getting controlled. Kindly ensure that you do not come in close contact with your family members since the disease spreads by respiratory droplets. If possible, please get them vaccinated. Also, kindly share your medical records if you have already consulted a doctor to discuss further.

I hope this helps. Do revert in case of further doubts. Thank you.

Same symptoms don't mean you have the same problem. Consult a doctor now!
