Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I am 23 years old female. I am having mood swings, especially during my periods. The mood swings start one week before my periods and in case the periods get delayed, they last till the first day of my periods. These are highly affecting my personal life. I have PCOD too so I have irregular periods.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

From what you have mentioned, you are having PMDD (premenstrual dysphoric disorder). During menstruation, a lot of hormonal changes occur in a female body. These changes can alter the amount of neurotransmitters like serotonin in the brain, which causes mood swings. It is a very common condition but often it is not given enough attention and care. However, this condition is treatable. If this is affecting your day-to-day activities, then you should get a consultation done and get it treated.

Hope this helps you.

Thank you.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

Thank you for your suggestion. However, sometimes the mood swings affect my personal and professional life too. As I am a teacher, I have to control my emotions, but many times my emotions are at a peak and there is an outburst of anger and tears.

Hi,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

I understand your concern. You definitely need to consult a psychiatrist. It is a condition for which treatment is available and you are not supposed to go through these sufferings. It is like any other illness such as diabetes, hypertension, etc., which can be treated; so please seek medical help. Meanwhile, you can do things like exercising daily, eating nutritious food, and maintaining a daily routine. I advise you not to delay in getting psychiatric help.

Thank you.

Take care.
