Is it normal to bleed for weeks after a medical abortion?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

My wife had a medical abortion. She was three weeks pregnant at that time. She is still bleeding. I have attached her reports.

Please help.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I went through your query and understood your concern.

MTP (medical termination pregnancy) pills should be consumed with a particular dose and scheduled according to weeks of gestation. Usually after taking Misoprostol (prostaglandin) tablets, bleeding will start within 24 hours. It may stay for a week after the complete abortion. If it is incomplete, then abdominal cramps and excessive bleeding could occur. Even after a complete abortion, beta hCG (human chorionic gonadotropin) takes around two weeks to come into the pre-pregnant range.

I hope this has helped you.

Thanks and regards.
