Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I have been feeling really stressed out lately, and someone mentioned music therapy. What is that all about? Can you explain how listening to music can actually help with mental health? Also, is it something I can do on my own, or do I need to see a professional for it? I am just trying to find ways to relax and take care of my mind.

Please help.

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

Thank you for taking help from a psychiatrist. I can understand your problem.

Music therapy helps release dopamine and serotonin in your brain, which aids relaxation. Listening to classical music daily for 20 to 30 minutes can assist in managing stress. Additionally, there are other lifestyle modifications that work on the same mechanism.

  1. Engaging in daily exercise for 30 to 45 minutes, such as going for a walk, can help reduce stress.
  2. Practicing meditation for 20 minutes daily involves sitting in a comfortable position and concentrating on normal breathing without attempting to stop or force thoughts. This practice can promote relaxation.
  3. Consuming healthy, home-cooked foods and avoiding junk foods is essential.
  4. Ensuring adequate hydration by drinking enough water is important.
  5. Spending quality time with friends and family daily or engaging in video calls if you are away from family can be beneficial.
  6. Devoting time to creative hobbies like reading, journaling, painting, drawing, or learning new skills, languages, or musical instruments is recommended.
  7. Aiming for seven to eight hours of sleep each night is crucial for overall well-being.
  8. Avoiding tobacco, alcohol, or any substance abuse is imperative for maintaining mental and physical health.

Hope this helps you and get back if you have any doubts.

Thank you.
