Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I consulted a venereologist and suggested getting tested, and they found I had Mycoplasma genitalium. My wife was also tested and was alright. I did not have any other partner for the past 12 years. Can this disease go unnoticed, as I did not have any symptoms till now? Kindly help.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com. I understand your concern. Mycoplasma genitalium is caused due to bacteria and is considered to be a sexually transmitted infection. Mycoplasma usually is transmitted via sexual contact with an infected person, even without complete penetration. Mycoplasma usually shows symptoms within two to 35 days of exposure in the form of a burning sensation while urinating, discharge at the end of the tip of the penis, burning and itching sensation at the end of the penis, water discharge from the penis and may also affect the urinary tract in some cases. However, symptoms may even occur years after exposure to mycoplasma as the bacteria remains dormant without showing any symptoms. Once your immunity gets weakened, it shows itself in the above symptoms. The symptoms may never appear in some situations, and the mycoplasma bacterium remains dormant throughout life. As you have mentioned, the presence of genital warts as well, which is caused due to human Papillomavirus (HPV), which presents itself in the form of flat, raised, or filiform lesions on the genital area affecting the penile shaft, glans penis, and scrotal area, which is also a sign of weakened immunity as HPV usually appears among individuals with weakened immunity. However, in the presence of the above symptoms that I have mentioned, it is advised to undergo treatment in the form of oral antibiotics. Since the medications your doctor has prescribed have not been mentioned, with the assumption that your doctor would have prescribed oral antibiotics for the same, I would like to advise you to continue using the medication until the bacterial infection is treated well. Do not worry. If treated well, mycoplasma has a good chance of recovery. However, it also needs to be noted that due to their appearance in case of low immunity, I would like to advise you to consider strengthening your immunity in the form of multivitamins, especially. 1. Zinc acetate tablets 50 mg twice daily for two months 2. follow a balanced diet consisting of fruits, vegetables, fiber, and enough carbohydrates and proteins to strengthen immunity. 3. Avoid excess red meat, sweets, and oily food, as they may cause an imbalanced diet. 3. Radiofrequency cauterization procedure where the wart lesions would be gently burnt off in a single session. 4. If you can not undergo this procedure, I suggest you use Aldara 5 % on the wart. This cream is very strong and may cause irritation and a burning sensation for first-time users, especially because it involves sensitive mucosal areas such as genital areas. So they should be used with caution and are only advised to be applied exactly on the lesion after protecting the surrounding area with a good layer of Vaseline. This cream must be used only twice a week, initially at least three days apart for three weeks. Thank you.
