Will eye power increase with age in a 5 year old?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

My daughter has been diagnosed with a cylindrical power of -2 and -2.5. Can that be cured to normal if she takes healthy diet and eye exercises? Will it increase with age as she is 5 years old?

Answered by Dr. Bhavna G.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

According to what you have mentioned, your daughter has myopia (short sight). It commonly occurs in children due to excessive near work. There is no research that supports diet or eye exercises to improve the condition. However, avoiding excessive near work (such as using mobiles, tablet, computer) helps. A 6 monthly checkup with the ophthalmologist for refraction testing (with and without cycloplegia) and fundus examination is needed to monitor progression. In most cases, with the use of refractive correction, improvement is seen. In some cases, the refractive error may progress (pathological myopia), wherein the retina also gets involved. Hence, fundus examination by an ophthalmologist is necessary. Diet rich in vitamin A (carrot, papaya, etc.) can be given to support the retina.
