How do I manage or prevent severe nausea during bus travel?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello Doctor,

I am 19 years old. I am about 5 feet 11 inches tall and weigh 119 pounds. I am thin and a student. I have a problem with travel sickness. Even during 3.1 miles bus ride, I feel symptoms of nausea. I have read many solutions on the internet, but I would like some personal suggestions.

Yesterday I traveled about 37.3 miles and felt nauseous throughout the day until I rested at night. Now I have to travel again and return to the same destination. I have to change three vehicles, making it a total of six rides, and I may have to stand as I might not get a seat.

There may also be traffic, which will make it worse. I feel like I cannot tolerate it, and I have to do this again. Even the smell of a vehicle, smoke, makes me feel like vomiting immediately.

Kindly advise.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I have read your query and understand your concern.

This is a common problem and is usually not serious. You may take a tablet of Promethazine about 30 minutes before travel. It helps to reduce nausea and vomiting. However, it may cause drowsiness, so avoid activities that require alertness after taking it.

I would suggest the following:

  • Eat something light before traveling. Avoid heavy, oily, fried, spicy foods, carbonated drinks, alcohol, and non-vegetarian food before travel, as these can worsen symptoms.

  • Prefer light foods like flat bread, rice, lentils, vegetables, fruits, or salad.

  • Stay well hydrated with water or juice in small sips during travel.

  • You may keep a peppermint or an orange-flavored candy in the mouth; frequent swallowing can help reduce nausea.

Try to recline and relax during the travel. Sleep if possible. Listening to soft music or practicing slow breathing may also help. Avoid reading or using mobile phones during travel, especially on bumpy roads, as it can increase nausea. Focus on a fixed point ahead or close your eyes if needed. Take short breaks when possible to rest and drink water.

I hope you are satisfied with my answer. For further queries, you can consult me at iCliniq.

Thank you.
