How do I manage itchy, swollen neck sores and back pain?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

I have two swollen, itchy, and painful sores on the back of my neck. Additionally, I am experiencing soreness on the right side of my lower back.

What to do? Kindly help.

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I understand your concern.

The two red, raised, and swollen sores on the back of your neck could be enlarged boils or folliculitis, an infection of the hair follicles. These may itch, hurt, and feel soft when touched. When several boils pop up at once, they can form a carbuncle, which can make the area around the boils grow and hurt more, and the pain may spread to nearby areas, like the back.

Most of the time, germs, especially Staphylococcus aureus, cause these kinds of infections. They can get worse if you scratch them or do not treat them.

The pain in your lower back could be caused by muscle strain, bad posture, or, less often, an infection that is spreading throughout your body, especially if you have fever, chills, or redness that spreads.

For now, I suggest keeping the area clean, not scratching or rubbing the sores, and using warm compresses several times a day to help the fluid drain naturally. It is important to see a doctor right away if the swelling gets worse, the pain gets worse, or you get a fever or redness that spreads. You may need medicines or a small drainage procedure.

Overall health can also affect healing, so it is best to get checked out by a doctor to make sure you get the right care.

I hope this addresses your concern.

Please provide comments and let me know if you have any more questions.

I would be pleased to assist you further.

Thank you.
