How do I manage oily skin, cheek scars and hair fall?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

I have oily skin and scars on my cheeks. My hair is silky, but after bathing, by the next day, my scalp develops a soil-like substance that comes off when I scratch it with my nails. I am also experiencing hair fall, and some of my hair has already turned white.

I would like product recommendations for the following:

  • Shampoo - I was recently advised by a doctor to use K-ZPTO shampoo, which I have already ordered.
  • Conditioner.
  • Face wash - I am already using Kozisol face wash.
  • Moisturizer.
  • Sunscreen.

Please suggest suitable products for each of these.

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I know how annoying it is to have oily skin, scars on the face, hair fall, and flaky scalp, especially when these problems affect your confidence and life. Don’t worry, I will select each one and try my best to explain the condition and its management clearly.

The first thing to know is that what you are experiencing is quite common and can be managed with a good routine, patience, and consistent care. You see your scalp is flaky, like dirt, and that you're losing hair. These are features of seborrheic dermatitis. You can also have oily skin and early thinning of hair. The facial scars are likely to be post-acne scars and may improve slowly with proper care.

Establish a simple, consistent daily skin care routine. Wash your face with Kozisol face wash (Kojic acid, Niacinamide, and Salicylic acid) every morning and night. Then, use a light moisturizer that will not clog your pores. Even if you’re indoors, always use sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher to prevent darkening of scars and to protect your skin from sun damage.

AZIDERM (Azelaic acid) 10 percent cream. Azelaic acid is used to treat acne and acne scars. Use a pea-sized amount every night and follow with a moisturizer for at least four to eight weeks to see visible results. This helps to improve texture, pigmentation, acne, and acne marks. If dryness occurs, apply every other night during the first week. Once your skin gets used to it, you can use it every night for the rest of the time.

Do not use harsh styling products or apply excess heat to your hair. These can aggravate hair fall and irritation. Do not scratch your scalp. Use a shampoo containing Ketoconazole plus zinc pyrithione twice a week for scalp flakes and dandruff. On other days, use a mild shampoo that is non-medicated. Apply a light conditioner to the strands of hair only and avoid the scalp.

Use Zyscalp lotion ( Betamethasone + antifungal ) once at bedtime for 2 weeks to control inflammation, flaking, and the soil-like material. Do not take more than two weeks to prevent side effects.

Eat a diet rich in protein to keep your hair healthy, by eating eggs, milk, legumes, and lean meats. If your hair fall doesn’t stop, you can ask your doctor to check your levels of vitamin B12, iron and zinc. Premature greying is genetic most of the time. However, copper supplementation might help slow down further greying.

I hope this has helped you.

Please feel free to reach out to me again for further queries.

Thank you.
