How to maintain good oral hygiene in children?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

My son is eight years old. He has some cavities and white deposits on his teeth. I do not know how to maintain oral hygiene in children. So, please tell me, what are the best practices and techniques for maintaining good oral hygiene in children? Could you please provide information on the recommended brushing and flossing routines, as well as guidance on choosing appropriate toothbrushes, toothpaste, and mouthwash for children? Additionally, what are some tips for promoting healthy eating habits and reducing the risk of cavities and gum disease in children?

Kindly suggest.

Hello,

Welcome to iCliniq.com.

I understand your concern.

The first rule is that whenever your child consumes anything sweet he/she must rinse his/her mouth with normal tap water. The child must brush two times a day with a child-friendly toothpaste which is mostly fluoride-free. The child should limit intake of junk food and sugary drinks that can cause early decay of the teeth. A calcium-rich diet is important for keeping teeth strong, and foods or fruits rich in vitamin C should be consumed. Fruits like oranges, gooseberries, papaya, and mangoes are all good sources of vitamin C. Vitamin C helps in maintaining good gum health but the thumb rule is to brush two times daily and also rinse your mouth after eating.

I hope this helps.

Let me know if you have any other concerns.

Thank you.
