What STI tests are needed after unprotected oral sex?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

I received oral sex from a female approximately 39 days ago and do not have any symptoms. Since the oral sex was unprotected, I decided to undergo a basic STD panel test. I will share the test results shortly, but please note that the gonorrhea test was not included in the panel.

My question is: do I need to undergo any additional tests? If so, please specify which tests are necessary. I also want to mention that I have a family, and my child is currently breastfeeding. However, I have not been physically intimate with my wife for the past 39 days.

Please help.

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I am genuinely concerned about your worries.

Your HSV (herpes simplex virus) test is still positive, but it is for herpes simplex virus, so there is no need to worry. Other STD (sexually transmitted diseases) panel tests came back negative, and there are no issues noted in those results. It might be helpful to consult a superspecialist, like a dermatologist, since this is related to the STD panel.

Your HIV tests (HIV-1 and HIV-2) are negative, which is conclusive, with an accuracy rate of 99.9 %. You mentioned that you do not have any symptoms, which suggests you are safe. Nonetheless, it is important that you complete the treatment prescribed, which includes taking Doxycycline 100 mg once a day after meals for ten days to address the infectious disease. Also, please note that Gonorrhea testing is crucial and was not included in the initial test.

While your other tests came back negative except for HSV, you still need to consult a dermatologist to understand why the HSV result has remained positive for such a long time.

Just relax; you are safe on all fronts, but checking in with a dermatologist could provide clarity regarding the prolonged HSV positivity.

If you have any more questions, feel free to ask. I would be happy to guide you. Please keep your valuable feedback for better patient care.

Thank you so much.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

Thank you for the reply.

I received a positive result for the HSV-1 IgG test, but I am more concerned about the gonorrhea test, which is not included in my testing panel. There is an NAAT test available for gonorrhea, but it is quite expensive. I would like your advice on whether I need to undergo the NAAT test for gonorrhea.

Please help.

Hi,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

The venereal disease research laboratory (VDRL) test is negative, and the test for Treponema pallidum is also negative, indicating no syphilis. No additional tests are required. Please consult a dermatologist to determine if a NAAT (nucleic acid amplification test) is necessary.

I hope this helps you.

Thank you.
